EasyOCR
Finds printed text in an image and returns it as plain text, one line per detected region. Runs the open-source EasyOCR library with 17 selectable languages.
Overview
This Wiro app runs EasyOCR, the open-source OCR library from Jaided AI. The library works in two stages: the CRAFT detector finds text regions, then a CRNN recognizer with an LSTM and CTC decoding reads each one. EasyOCR covers more than 80 languages in scripts that include Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, Devanagari and Chinese; this page exposes 17 of them.
What you can build
- Reading plate numbers and street names from photos, the two cases shown in the samples
- Making the text in screenshots and slide images searchable
- A first pass over scanned forms or receipts, before a parser or an LLM sorts the text into fields
- Tagging product photos by the words printed on the packaging
Inputs
Upload an image, or give a public image URL instead. The default input is a banner with a large headline and a lighter subtitle line.
Language is a multi-select with English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Dutch, Czech, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Hungarian, Korean and Hindi. English is selected by default. Pick the languages printed in the image. Not every pair can be combined: the EasyOCR documentation says English works with every language, and languages that share characters usually work together.
Outputs
A .txt file with the recognized text, one detected region per line. The Ontario plate sample comes back as "ONTARIO", "93JA52" and "YOURS TO DISCOVER" on separate lines.
Limitations
- EasyOCR lists handwritten text support under what is coming next, so handwriting is not a supported input today.
- The sample outputs contain only text, without box positions or confidence scores, so table and column layout does not survive.
- Symbols can be misread. In the street-sign sample the arrows were read as digits, so "9-15" came back as "29-15" and "1-31" as "4131". The plate sample ends with a stray "69" that is not on the plate.
Safety & compliance
EasyOCR is released under the Apache 2.0 license.
